The very last club to be visited was the South Eastman Rotary Club in Steinbach, Manitoba. Due to the federal election their visit was rescheduled to October 26th. A luncheon following the visit included a celebration of the club’s involvement with the RCMP’s DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. The luncheon was attended by Rotarians, partners, RCMP officers, students and school officials.

This program brings drug awareness to the grade 6 and grade 8 classes in the middle schools in the Hanover school division. A highlight of the presentation was the six students from three schools speaking about the program and its benefits from their point of view.  RCMP members spoke of the value of the program to the community and the school officials spoke to the benefits within the schools. The program goes beyond drug education, but helps the students develop effective gang and violence resistance techniques. The list of skills taught is impressive. This is a program well worth supporting should you have the opportunity to do so in your community.

Another project of the club is the maintenance of the windmill at the Mennonite Heritage Village. Even though the village was closed for the season we were treated to a tour of the windmill. In appreciation of the club’s support there is a prominent plaque thanking Rotary inside the windmill.
