R. I.'s 2012 Rose Bowl float "Inching Towards End of Polio" declared most beautiful float under 35 feet

Once again congratulations are in order for the Rotary Rose Bowl Float Committee and volunteers for an award winning Float in the 2012 Tournament of Rose Parade.

This is the second consecutive year Rotary International has won the award highlighting critical volunteer work.  Rotary International, like many service clubs, has a presence in the Rose Bowl Parade through an independent organization that raises funds and volunteers to put together a float for the parade to raise awareness of Rotary's work. The float committee is made up of Rotarians but is not financially supported by Rotary International.

RI President Kalyan Banerjee and his wife, Binota, rode on the float this year, which is the first for a R.I. president. "Inching Towards End of Polio" won the Princess Trophy for "The most beautiful float under 35 feet."  The float, featuring a 22-foot tall inchworm, reflects the final one percent. Clad in a white coat and stethoscope, the inchworm is nicknamed “Dr. J” for Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed a vaccine for polio.

The Rotary Polio Awareness campaign continues as a result of the great TV coverage for the parade. An estimated 300 million viewers from around the world had a chance to learn that Rotary is leading the way in eradicating this disease.

So to all of the Rotarians who worked on the float, we owe you a special vote of thanks for your efforts on behalf of all Rotarians.
