I cannot miss the chance to urge everyone to come to the District 5550 Conference. The venue this year is the Lakeview Resort and Conference Centre in Gimli Manitoba.

Gimli is well known in the Icelandic community around the world for its strong connections with Iceland. We will be showcasing the rich cultural heritage of New Iceland as it was once known. Gimli is a super place to visit and has many local attractions to keep you busy in any spare time you may have. My personal recommendation is that you arrive a day or so early or stay on a while to further experience our town and its surrounding area.

Arrive early enough on Thursday to enjoy golfing at the Links on the Lake. Relax on Thursday evening at the Meet and Greet to renew your friendship with the Rotarians you already know and get to know the newcomers to our conference.

The opening ceremony Friday morning will include greetings from officials and then move into the meat and potatoes of the weekend. The speakers will be informative and challenging.

Our Rotary International President’s representative Past District Governor Elizabeth Smith-Yeats from the Rotary Club of Detroit will bear greetings on behalf of President Ravindran. That evening we will have dinner at the only wooden dance pavilion still in regular use on the prairies. The dinner and entertainment will feature the major cultures found in the Interlake region of Manitoba.

Saturday morning will continue the theme of the conference, then after lunch there will be the annual presentation by the exchange students. Of course following that we have the annual meeting of the district. The Governor’s Gala will be combined with the District’s Million Dollar Dinner. This event will be held at the Gimli Recreation Centre as we expect to have extra guests for that event.

I have only touched on part of the exciting things that will take place during the conference. Come to Gimli and set your inner Viking free.
