As the 2012-13 begins I suspect it will be a big year for Fran and I. We get to travel and meet many Rotarians and make many new friends. During the assembly in San Diego we were told to turn to the left, then to the right and greet each person with "You have a new friend in me". We'll be dizzy!!

However, that is what Rotary is all about: friendship, fun and "Peace through Service". Peace through Service, what a powerful thought. We can induct a member, build a community project or dig a well. It is all something that puts someone at ease. Our fight against Polio is certainly doing that.

Rick & Fran 500p

There are many challenges facing us; from what shirt to wear, to the world financial and economic condition. Rotary takes a bite out of each one of these and continually makes us want to make things better. To us, the biggest war we have to win is the eradication of Polio. We ask you to join with us to finish this task so we can get on with a new one!

We also want you to have a look at our youth programs and get involved. The future of Rotary depends on you to get the younger generation more involved. If your club isn't supporting a youth program perhaps it's time to talk about it. If you think about the six Areas of Focus; Water/ Sanitation, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Education and Literacy, Economic and Community Development, Maternal and Child Health, and Peace and Conflict resolution, there will be more than one young entrepreneur already involved. You just have to get them to join us.

We have to better our marketing and public relations efforts to educate and improve the membership and support. Once they're in, it is a matter of retention which circles around to project involvement. Keep them busy and they will stay!

There are many new things coming over the next couple of years; Future Vision, new membership ideas, a new GSE format, easier grants, and better continuity. We can and will make a difference with "Peace through Service" Be proud of what you do and show it!

Fran and I certainly look forward to working with Rotary and all the Rotarians in District 5550 this coming year. Speaking of "Service above Self" and the 4-Way Test, have you signed your organ donor card this year?
